UNT Mobile Summer Institute on Scientific Teaching

The Mobile Summer Institutes (MoSIs) are institution-based iterations of the nationally renowned Summer Institutes on Scientific Teaching that address challenges in STEM education reform unique to college and universities (More information on the national program is available at: http://www.summerinstitutes.org/mobile-institutes). UNT has hosted the Mobile Institute since 2017. Local MoSI coordinators are Dr. Lee Hughes and Dr. Mark Burleson from the UNT Department of Biological Sciences. Details about the UNT Mobile Summer Institute and upcoming dates can be found below.

Why attend the UNT Mobile Summer Institute?

The UNT Mobile Summer Institute will expand and sharpen participants teaching skills through workshops developed by national science education experts. The institute is designed to foster collaboration and taking a fresh look at the courses that you teach. Participants will develop original, innovative classroom materials ready for immediate implementation in the semester following the workshop.

Who should attend?

Anyone who teaches college courses in the science and mathematics fields should attend, including full or part-time faculty, teaching staff, and graduate students. Participants come from all levels of prior experience with active learning in the classroom, from none to extensive. Participants are placed in working groups based on the types of courses they teach, so finding several colleagues who teach the same or similar courses to join you can also be rewarding. The UNT Mobile Summer Institute encourages colleagues from UNT and nearby colleges and universities to attend. Our previous institutes have included participants and facilitators from UNT, Texas Woman's University, and Tarrant County College.

When is the UNT Mobile Summer Institute? What is the schedule?

The 2019 UNT Mobile Summer Institute on Scientific Teaching will be held on the UNT campus in Denton, TX from May 13-17, 2019. The main workshop will meet from 1-5pm on Monday, 8:30am-5pm on Tuesday and Wednesday, and 8:30am-3pm on Thursday. Participants are strongly encouraged to also participate in a strategic planning workshop on Thursday from 3-5pm and Friday 8:30am-1pm (including presentations and discussions with invited administrators from your campus about your strategic planning documents). Lunch is provided as part of the institute on Tuesday through Friday.
